How this works
Your cost per mile is the floor. Book under it and the load costs you money to run, no matter how good the rate looked on the board.
The math has three parts. Fixed costs are what you pay whether the wheels turn or not: the truck, insurance, permits, parking. Divide those by the miles you actually run in a month. Fuel is your price per gallon divided by your real MPG, not the brochure number. Maintenance is what you set aside each month for tires, service and whatever breaks.
Add the three and you have your break-even.
What most people leave out
Their own pay. This tells you what the truck needs, not what you need. Put the salary you want to take home into “Other fixed” and the number that comes out is the real one.
The other thing: use your actual miles, not the miles you wish you ran. An 8,000-mile month costed at 10,000 miles gives you a CPM that looks good and does not exist.
