How this works

The rate the broker quotes is gross. What matters is what is left after fuel for every mile, tolls, the lumper and the dispatch fee.

Deadhead counts. Sixty miles to get to the load is sixty miles of diesel nobody pays you for, and it is usually what turns a decent load into one that barely breaks even.

The two lines worth watching

All-in rate per mile divides the gross across every mile, loaded and empty. That is the honest comparison between two loads, because a $2.90 load with 200 miles of deadhead can pay less than a $2.55 load sitting at your door.

The line against your CPM is the one that decides it. If that goes negative, the load does not cover what it costs to have the truck roll those miles, however good the cheque looks.

When to take a thin load anyway

Sometimes it is worth it, if it moves you out of a dead market and into one with freight. That call is yours, but make it looking at the number instead of guessing.
