How this works
IFTA exists so you do not file fuel tax separately in every state you drive through. You file one quarterly return with your base state and they split the tax based on where you actually drove.
The part that trips people up is the gallons, and that is what this calculator handles. First it works out your fleet MPG: total miles divided by total gallons bought across the quarter. Then for each state, your miles there divided by that MPG gives your taxable gallons. Burn more than you bought in that state and you owe the difference. Buy more than you burned and you get a credit.
Why you enter the rates
IFTA rates change every quarter and several jurisdictions carry surcharges on top. A stale number built into this page would be worse than no number, so the calculator does the gallons and you enter the current rate from the official IFTA rate sheet.
The habit that saves your weekend
Record your odometer at every state line and keep every fuel receipt. Do that and filing takes twenty minutes instead of two days rebuilding a whole quarter.
