What counts as a hotshot load?
Freight that is too urgent or too small to wait for a full truckload, usually moved on a one-ton pickup with a gooseneck or flatbed trailer. Machinery parts, construction materials, oilfield equipment — anything a job site has stopped for.
Do I need my own authority to run hotshot?
Yes. Dispatch works on behalf of a carrier, so you run under your own MC number and your own insurance. The broker setups and the paperwork that come with them are handled for you.
Is hotshot worth running against a semi?
It depends on the lane and the load. Hotshot wins on speed, and on freight nobody wants to put in a 53-footer. It loses on long, heavy, unhurried runs. A dispatcher who only ever tells you it is worth it is not reading your numbers.
